ESL & TESOL

One of the specialties of the Department of Linguistics since its inception in 1964 is what is sometimes called "applied linguistics," or how people learn second or multiple languages. We make practical use of our research and support the University and the Pittsburgh community in many ways.

Our small class sizes mean that English-language students enjoy an immersive experience. And our wealth of practical experience and research mean that we offer TESOL certificate seekers the most up-to-date insights on second language acquisition.

English Language Institute

The English Language Institute offers intensive, non-credit, ESL courses. We also offer for-credit courses for students enrolled in academic programs at Pitt.

TESOL Certification

We offer a post-baccalaureate certificate in TESOL, an acronym for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

International Teaching Assistant (ITA) English Language Fluency Test

As a Commonwealth of PA requirement, all international TAs/TFs must be tested for language skills before being assigned any teaching duties.

English Proficiency Test

The English Proficiency Test is a test of general language abilities for incoming international undergradates administered by the Department of Linguistics.

Courses in English as a Second Language

Our small class sizes mean that everyone gets highly personalized attention to improve their proficiency in writing, speaking, and vocabulary.
