Colloquium: Sean Crist "Transitioning to Industry: Careers for Linguistics in natural Language Preocessing

November 2, 2018 - 3:00pm to 4:15pm

Abstract

This is a practical career talk for linguists who are considering industrial work in Natural Language Processing (NLP).  The talk covers three areas.

• Approach to human language.  Linguistics and NLP have differing goals, and these differences are reflected in the substantially different types of models commonly used in the two fields.  This section is a linguist’s overview of the engineering perspective on human language.

• Technical skills.  NLP work requires at least a minimal set of technical skills, which can be acquired through coursework or self-study.  This section lays out a manageable set of essential skills, and also discusses ways to further study NLP.

• Job search and interviews.  This section briefly covers the current state of the job market, what to look for in a job, and how to maximize one’s chances in an interview situation."
