Joe Patrick presented recently at the Midwest Slavic Conference at Ohio State University on the topic of "Stance and National Identity in Montenegrin Twitter Discourse"
The paper is a qualitative analysis of Montenegrin Twitter discourse concerning the parliamentary elections in 2020. Graphemes, emojis, and other discursive interactions were collected through a follower-of-follower method and are shown to serve as markers of stance. These markers undergo the semiotic process of bricolage to create a locally-meaningful pro-Montenegrin Twitter style.
