PhD student Miroo Lee awarded Language Learning Dissertation Research Grant

Miroo Lee has been awarded a prestigious Dissertation Research Grant from the journal Language Learning.  Miroo’s dissertation project is entitled, “How does language mode develop over time? Relating phonological category development and short-term perceptual adaptation”.

Miroo's research examines the mechanisms that allow bilinguals to adjust their listening strategies in order to optimally recognize speech sounds in their two languages.  For her dissertation experiments, native Korean listeners with different amounts of English-language experience will be asked to identify both Korean and English speech sounds in a small set of different listening tasks.  Miroo will then examine how the ability to make perceptual adjustments develops over time, from the earliest to the most advanced stages of second language acquisition.

Congratulations, Miroo!
