Research Interests

Joe is broadly interested in how identity is constructed and circulated through linguistic means, particularly national and political elements of social identity. Focusing on data collected online, Joe uses a variety of methods and approaches to understand how individuals use the affordances of the internet (e.g., orthography, emoji, multimodality, memes) to convey social meaning across different speech registers. This research touches on many issues of language and power, language policy and planning, and multilingualism in an ever-globalizing world. Joe is also interested in questions of structural variation (i.e., syntactic and morphological) in the Slavic and East European languages, particularly the Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian languages of the Western Balkans.
