Event Summary
Type a few words into the text box that prompts the synthetic image generator DALL-E to take action and out pops an image! Was it close to the one you had in mind? Was it very different from the one you had in mind? No matter your expectation, the likelihood was that you were delighted to see your words conjured into images that you did not need to put in any effort to create. But these images aren't produced by magic, or are they? How do the synthetic image generators associate words with images and then how do they create novel image outputs? This will be the subject of this colloquium alongside some thoughts on how and why these machinic algorithms might be perceived as magical by both technophiles and technophobes alike.
