Kanwit Publishes Article in Studies in Second Language Acquisition

Dr. Matt Kanwit's new article "Exploring lexical effects in second language interpretation: The case of mood in Spanish adverbial clauses" has been published in the latest issue of Studies in Second Language Acquisition, September 2018. The article demonstrates that native speakers and advanced learners make use of a combination of patterns of co-occurrence (i.e., collocational properties) and individual lexical items (i.e., lexical properties) in interpreting adverbial clauses. The work, in collaboration with Kimberly Geeslin of Indiana University, also reveals that nuanced differences in interpretation exist for native speakers and highly advanced learners, even on items that prescriptively co-occur with only one mood.
